Public Address of the Associate Minister of Health of New Zealand

Wednesday, 3/27/2013

Peter Dunne, Associate Minister of Health for New Zealand, in his address to the Perinatal Health Trust on on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, outlined his countries plan to address the problem of maternal mental health. He stated that:

"The Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee reports on the causes of maternal mortality and the major cause of death for women during pregnancy and in the 42 days following the end of the pregnancy is suicide. While this is a tiny subset of the overall figures for suicide, it is a distressing reality, and it is very concerning that suicide features so highly in the maternal mortality numbers, particularly when the suicide occurs during pregnancy."
